How I Spend My God Time Each Day, Simple But Purposeful

Taking time to read and study God’s Word is something that’s been important to my Christian walk since I became a Christian. It was always impressed upon us in our home as children, to spend time in God’s word. As littles, we started out with devotionals and “Your story Hour” tapes. But as we matured, then we saw the need for ourselves to spend time with God to grow our walk with Christ. I’m not by any means a “pro” at studying my Bible, and it’s probably not the way everyone would want to, but this is what works for me and helps me keep my mind on His Word throughout the day as well as remember what I’ve studied.

God time. Bible reading, Scripture reading, Reading the Bible

I use a journal Bible and love it!

I’ve linked it HERE. It’s an excellent option for those of us who like to write or are artists. It has plenty of margin room and lines for notes. I love this version, and definitely would recommend this one for any journalists, and really anyone who loves taking notes while reading.

The setting of when I spend this time has shifted greatly once become a mom. If I am able to get up before him I usually do it first thing in the morning. If it doesn’t happen then, I will do it at his naptime. I find that the quieter it is in our home the easier it is for me to focus. Somedays that isn’t the case and so it happens when he’s up and about, and ill try to have him do something quiet. The other thing I love to do if possible is having a playlist of worship songs. It helps me focus and meditate on what I’m reading. I also will grab a good hot drink and a blanket. Make this time enjoyable!

I usually start my God time first with prayer.

I ask for wisdom and understanding as I read, and that His Word would convict, cleanse me, and challenge me in ways He knows I need it. For me I am a pretty straightforward- just go through the Bible from start to end. I know some do it chronologically and that’s great too. I find reading through each book consecutively is just what I like. Some books and chapters I’ll spend more time on, taking apart passage by passage to best understand what’s being written.

But for each sitting, I usually do 1-2 chapters at a time. I love highlighting and underlining parts that especially jump out at me. Whether they apply to a situation in my life, something I’ve seen repeated, or a concept that’s new that I want to understand more. I’ll also sometimes journal phrases out for remembrance. Often material objects, I’ll create an art piece on the page, and that really helps engrave in my mind what I read that day.

Once I’ve finished reading, I then pray over the scriptures.

Whatever sins have been revealed, lessons, or concepts, I pray them over my life. I pray for help from the Holy Spirit to give me the strength to change the things that God points out in His scripture is wrong. I’ll also pray over matters that God brings to my mind during this time. I find that often in my God time, He will bring to mind the real-life situations and conflicts that I need help in.

Lastly, this year I started something that I have been wanting to do for a while: memorizing a verse a month. I felt really convicted about this. As a student it was a daily part of my schooling but since then Ive slacked in it. So I decided to make it a part of my routine. I’ll practice that a few times a few times a week as well, to keep it in my memory. Its been really good picking out verses and learning the context of them too.

So that’s it. It’s not very complex but its purposeful and doing it this way make me want to spend time with him. It helps me look forward to this part of my day. I believe theirs always room for improvement as I grow spiritually. And I know it will eventually probably change with time. But for now this is what I do and I like it! That last tip I want to add is this. No matter what method you use make it a priority to just do it. Spending time with God each day should be so important to us. Its how we stay strengthened and encouraged. Its how we know His will for our life and what good he has in store for us.

xoxo, Shantel
